THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL by Abbi Waxman is a book that I saw recommended by many trusted book reviewers time and again on my Instagram feed, so I was excited with my Southern California bookstagram group decided to choose this title for our inaugural buddy read for August. Set in Los Angeles, it seemed the perfect fit for our group. I had the privilege of meeting Abbi Waxman at a recent author event and that made me even more excited to dig into this bookish book!
THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL centers on the title character, a woman with whom I feel a fond kinship, as I would guess many in our bookish community do. Nina likes a well ordered life, keeping organized, collecting books and scheduling in time for reading. While her reading companion is a cat instead of a dog, I felt that Nina and I had a lot in common!
Nina’s well ordered life is about to be faced with some upheaval though. It seems the father she never knew has recently died and put her into the will. Suddenly she has a family… so much family that it has to be laid out on complicated family trees for her to keep her new relatives straight. There is also a new man entering Nina’s life… a man who doesn’t like books? Her job at the local bookstore is in question as well as the story struggles to stay afloat.
This book was so much fun and I adored it! It really gives a lot of love to the bookish world we all know and love. There are a lot of actual laugh out loud moments and a lot of love, for books, friends and family, and a bit of romance. At its center, the book is really about Nina and her personal growth as she learns to broaden and enrich her life, while remaining true to her bookish self!
If you haven’t had a chance yet to read THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL, I recommend that you pick it up!
I loved it all with the exception of ch 5…. I thought the crassness wasn’t necessary.

I almost set it aside at ch 5 but I’m so glad I didn’t! It would have been a 5 Star Read except for that one chapter!
