THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alex E. Harrow

Rating: 4 / 5

After hearing a couple friends talk about THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E. Harrow, I knew it was one I wanted to add to my next BOTM order! It was a perfect book to pick up for my moth of mood reading and I read it both in print and via audio.

Set in the early 1900s, January is a character who finds herself not fitting in. She is the ward of a wealthy collector, Mr. Locke. She never knew her mother and her father is off exploring the world most of the time, seeking out new and different artifacts for Mr. Locke. While she sometimes feels affection from these men, January feels much like the things they collect. Her “in between” colored skin and her unknown origins leave her feeling quite out of place.

When January discovers a strange book, she feels strangely drawn into the story it contains. It seems to explain the fascination she has always felt with doors and the mysteries behind them. Compelled by the contents, January must strike out on her own adventure to seek out answers to her questions.

I really enjoyed this novel a lot! I loved the story within the story setup of the book that January discovers as well as the magic of the doors she encounters and the worlds beyond. I found January to be a great heroine and could feel for her need to know where she came from. Her father is a flawed man with intentions not immediately known and I could definitely feel her pain in loving her father but also feeling so abandoned by him. Those January must fight against are well ingrained in the story and multidimensional.

I really loved the fantasy element here as well and was impressed with the world building the author did. The magic of the book was well integrated into the real world settings developed. There were times when the pace felt a bit slower to me, but overall I thought it was really well done and it kept me engaged throughout.

This is a book that immediately catches the eye with that gorgeous cover and the prose is written to match! I would definitely recommend checking out THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY!
