The King Buddy Reads group on Instagram book for December was NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (which yes, isn’t a King read, but he is King’s son and this was a nice Christmas-ish pick). I have had this one on my TBR for quite a while, so was excited to get to this one!
In NOS4A2, Victoria (Vic) McQueen is a girl with some unique abilities. The book opens with Victoria as a child, able to travel great distances in a mysterious way and find missing items left behind.
Charles Manx is a man with unique abilities of his own, but he uses his to pick up children in his Rolls-Royce Wraith with its NOS4A2 vanity plate and take them out of the reality we know to a special place he calls Christmasland. When he picks up Vic he gets more than he bargained for and Vic is the first child to evade his grasp. Manx isn’t one to let bygones be bygones and years later he target’s Vic’s son. Vic has forgotten much of what she knew as a child, but she must bring herself to remember to save her son.
NOS4A2 was a wild ride and I really enjoyed it! This book is full of colorful characters who I found to be incredibly intriguing. Manx and his side kick are the ultimate personification of evil while Vic is first an innocent girl and later a very troubled woman with many layers of complication. The story itself kept me hooked and wanting to press on to the finish.
I completed much of this book on audio which is narrated by Kate Mulgrew and very well done. I frequently recommend King books as audiobooks because I think his style of story telling translates well to that medium and this is another book (and likely author) that I would highly recommend for audio!
While I don’t think this book is quite in the typical Christmas spirit we might expect for a holiday read, it was a fun and dark holiday pick to round out the season and definitely my favorite Christmas-ish read for 2019.
