THE LOOK-ALIKE by Erica Spindler (Out 1/28/2020)

Publication Date: 1/28/2020

Rating: 4 / 5

I received a complimentary advanced copy of THE LOOK-ALIKE by Erica Spindler from St. Martin’s Press. This is an author that I remember reading and enjoying in the past, so I was thrilled to get this in the mail!

In THE LOOK-ALIKE we are following Sienna Scott. In college, Sienna stumbled on the body of a classmate while trying to make her way back to her dorm during a blizzard. Apart from the obvious shock over the death of someone she kind of knew, Sienna is struck by the fact that this woman who was killed was wearing a nearly identical white coat. She is struck with the thought that the killer might have been after her instead. Fearing that she is beginning to show signs of her mother’s mental illness in addition to their strong physical resemblance , Sienna agrees to her father’s plan to send Sienna off to London to live with her grandmother.

Ten years later Sienna believes she is finally ready to return home and face her mother’s fragile mental health. She moves back into her old home, trying to build a new life in her old home town. Just as Sienna returns, however, the cold case in which Sienna played such a key role is reopened. Sienna must once again face her fears as she tries to figure out the truth.

I really enjoyed THE LOOK-ALIKE and I blasted through this book in just over 24 hours. While I wasn’t especially shocked by the twists the author included, I was hooked to the story throughout and I didn’t fully see the revelations coming.

This was a thriller which is of course something I love, but it also dealt with issues of mental health. Sienna’s mother has persecutory delusions, many of which are tied up in the belief that her late husband’s ex-wife is out to get her which sometimes includes the step-son that has been left to care for her in Sienna’s absence. With such delusions, it is incredibly hard to trust in anyone or to trust in the medications one needs to take to combat the paranoia. It is also easy to see why Sienna would worry that her own fears related to the young coed’s death are a manifestation of something more daunting than purely physical danger.

Overall I found THE LOOK-ALIKE to be a good and engaging read and I would recommend that you keep an eye out for it when it publishes on January 28, 2020!!
