THE CHILL by Scott Carson (Out 2/11/2020)

Publication Date: 2/11/2020

Rating: 4 / 5

I received a complimentary copy of THE CHILL by Scott Carson. Thank you to Atria/Emily Bestler Books for the chance to read for an honest review! The premise of this one had me intrigued and when I saw it had been blurbed by Stephen King, I was even more excited to get a copy!

THE CHILL focuses on the Chilewaukee reservoir and dam, the construction of which was deemed necessary to provide water to those living downstate. This forced families who were long term residents of Galesburg to relocate for the presumed greater good as their homes and their town were drowned.

Now, many years later, there is still a lot of unrest surrounding the dam and things seem to be getting worse. Many lives have been lost in the construction and maintenance of the dam and the water pipes. An inspector has been sent out to inspect and it seems the dam is in danger failing.

The book follows a woman who was born of one of the remaining families relocated in order to make the reservoir. She was taught at an early age about her ties to the land and the water. Her father works on the pipes in New York City. We also follow the local sheriff and his son, a water rescue drop out trying to get back on his feet. All are battling forces they don’t quite understand.

I really enjoyed this one! It was a great blend between a supernatural horror tale with elements of a realistic thriller. There are otherworldly forces at play to heighten the tension, but some of the scenarios such as the dam suffering from maintenance long neglected adds a more realistic scary twist.

The book started out strong with a woman weighing herself down and throwing herself into the water. This had me instantly hooked to want to know what happened. I found the book very engaging throughout and it kept me wondering where the story was heading. There were a few times where it slowed a bit for me, but overall this felt like a much faster read than I expected for a 450 page book.

This is one that I would recommend for fans of darker supernatural thrillers! THE CHILL by Scott Carson will be out on Feburary 11, 2020!
