Hello book friends and happy Monday! I am so excited to have a Monday check in post where I’m actually able to show you what I’m actually reading at the moment instead of being at work! I have today off for President’s Day and am very grateful to be curled up on the couch with the pup and my current read, especially after the neighbors threw a very loud and distracting fiesta yesterday!
I kicked off my holiday by starting YOU ARE NOT ALONE by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen with thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the chance to review this one early. I also have the audio from Libro.FM so I’m able to keep the book going while grabbing my much needed coffee refills! It is an appropriate drink choice for this one since the first chapter opens with one of the main characters getting her caffeine fix!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE opens with Shay heading out on a Sunday morning. She is on the job hunt and avoiding her roommate. The subway is nearly vacant, but a woman on the platform catches Shay’s eye. Shay is shocked by this woman’s vacant stare as she jumps in front of the approaching train to commit suicide. Shay is of course haunted by what the woman has done right in front of her.
In alternating chapters we get the perspective of Cassandra and Jane. These women knew the woman who Shay saw die and it seems they know some of what may have been behind the suicide. They are preparing a memorial, but their motives are highly suspect. I’m just a couple chapters in, but this book has me intrigued to keep it going today!
In addition to this one, I of course have (more than) a few more reads underway:
*ELANTRIS by Brandon Sanderson – I have only read Brandon Sanderson’s YA novel SKYWARD, but have been wanting to give some of his adult novels a try. These are pretty chunky reads and a bit outside of my comfort zone so when I saw that there was going to be a #Cosmerealong to explore some of his books over the next year plus (and that these long books are being broken down over a couple month each), I decided this would be a great way to try him out with the first book and see if I want to continue. I am 11 chapters into this one and am surprised how really engaging and approachable it is. I definitely plan to continue with the readalong!
I also started THIS TENDER LAND by William Kent Krueger over the weekend and look forward to continuing. This one follows a small group of kids trying to survive the Lincoln School, a place where Native American children and a few orphans are sent for education and harsh treatment. I am loving this one a lot, though it is also heartbreaking reading everything these kids are going through. I had to set it aside with the loud party next door because I wanted to be able to focus on it. I’m hoping to get back to this one today!
A few of the books, I’ve mentioned in prior posts are still on the go as well, though I anticipate that I will be finishing at least some of them up this week. BELOVED by Toni Morrison has been great on audio with the author’s narration so I’ve decided to hold off on continuing that one for tomorrow when I know I’ll have a lot of time in the car. I’m still working on CHRISTINE by Stephen King, SO WE CAN GLOW by Leesa Cross-Smith (a short story collection out from Grand Central Publishing on 3/10/2020) and THE FOUNTAINS OF SILENCE by Ruta Sepetys.
The long weekend has helped me do a bit of catch up and I’m feeling a lot better about my chances of actually finishing my ambitious February TBR (which is good because March’s pile is already looking pretty big again).
How was your weekend? What are you reading this week? I’d love to hear!
