I had added SCYTHE by Neal Shusterman to my TBR for March for one of my reading challenges, so when I saw that there was going to be a #BABBookClub buddy read for this book in March was perfect timing. Also, it is a buddy read that promotes pet pictures, so how could I not join?
SCYTHE is set in a world that has overcome all the hardships faced by man. There is no more hunger, disease, war or suffering and even death has been conquered. People are essentially immortal and killing oneself becomes a fun pastime for kids chasing a high because almost all deaths can be undone.
In order to keep populations under control and not overwhelm the world’s resources, the Scythedom was born. Scythes are charged with killing off just enough people to keep the population in balance. They are self-governed and left to their own devices. Two teens, Citra and Rowan, have been tapped by Scythe Faraday as potential new recruits who must learn the art of murder. They will be tested and tried to determine which of them will rise to the ranks of Scythe.
I had no clue when adding this to my March TBR how the world would change between the time I started this book at the beginning of March and the time I finished near the end of the month. I wasn’t initially sure that reading a book so focused on death would be the best thing as life became so focused on disease, but this book kept my attention hooked throughout.
As is the case with pretty much any utopian story, things are not as perfect as they seem and seeing through the eyes of Citra and Rowan who are just starting to learn the ropes of the life of a scythe gives the readers an excellent viewpoint of all sides. This book raises a lot of issues which seem very timely, kids putting themselves in the way of intentional harm and counting on medical services to fix it and people making decisions day by day about who gets to live and die.
Though this is not a short read, it really did fly past and I am definitely going to be picking up the rest of the books in this trilogy!
