SIX OF CROWS has been sitting on my shelf for far too long. I had seen so many glowing reviews for this book and for the other novels that take place in the Grishaverse that I picked up the SIX OF CROWS / CROOKED KINGDOM box set when I spotted it on Book Outlet some time back. I was excited to be able to move this one onto my March TBR when the bird on the cover prompt came up.
SIX OF CROWS follows a cast of characters as they attempt to pull off an impossible heist led by Kaz Brekker. The crew is made up of people with magic and those without in a world where the magical are very much “other” for some. Members of the crew have very complicated relationships and dark pasts and each has different reasons for joining in the heist. If they can pull it off, riches await, but if they cannot it could mean death and destruction for the team and potentially for the world as a whole.
I was so excited to start this one, but when I first picked it up earlier in the month I could not focus at all. You are given introductions to quite a few characters and a new world and it was hard to connect with initially so I decided to set it aside for another time. Several people told me that their experiences were the same and that it takes a good 75-100 pages to really get into the story. As March was winding down and this was the only TBR book I hadn’t yet read, I decided to give it another go and thankfully I found myself fully engaged by the time I hit page 100!
I do love a good cast of complicated characters and this book delivered. From prejudices and conflicting motives to the actual plotting of the complicated heist, there was a lot to grab my attention. The book alternates POV between the various team members and I really enjoyed each of those perspectives equally. Sometimes there are characters that I connected with more than others and that really wasn’t a concern with this one.
This is a novel that definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am very much looking forward to getting to CROOKED KINGDOM to complete the duology!

For the first 50 pages or so I was questioning the hype. After that I just flew through it and definitely get it now!

Omg one of my all time favorites! Glad you enjoyed it! Leigh Bardugo is a master of tying all the characters’ POVs together. I’m a writer and struggle with just two POV in my book.
And the world-building is fantastic too! Excited for you to read Crooked Kingdom!

It is rare to find a book with that many points of you where I feel invested in all of them, so totally agree she did this do well! Definitely excited for the next one!
