Thank you to Bookish First and Minotaur Books for the free review copy of THE SAFE PLACE by Anna Downes!
How did Monday come up so quickly again? I know that it feels like most days are pretty much the same these days, but knowing that I don’t have to worry about what I’ll find on my work computer for the weekend is SO much more peaceful!
My weekend was pretty good and very uneventful. I had planned to get a lot of reading in for the Reading Rush, but Saturday wound up being a day to catch up on some much needed sleep combined with hours spent crashed out with the TV. I did get a lot of reading done on Sunday, so I managed to finish two of the three books I had planned and I nearly finished my third.
THE SAFE PLACE by Anna Downes is the book I had picked for the prompt to read a book set someplace you want to go, and who wouldn’t want to go someplace with that pool and that view? I didn’t quite get this one finished before the readathon was over, but I flew through more than half of the book yesterday and I am really enjoying it and eager to finish it up tonight.
In THE SAFE PLACE, Emily is in a rough spot. She’s blown her auditions, been terminated from her temp job, and is lacking any friends or family who she feels comfortable asking for help. While the hits keep coming, Emily suddenly gets an offer that seems too good to be true. Her former boss is looking for someone to move into his estate in France to act as a housekeeper and personal assistant for his wife while she cares for their ailing daughter. Emily doesn’t feel that she can pass up such an opportunity, so she’s soon packing her bag. Life at the estate is idyllic but something strikes Emily (and the reader) as off, though what exactly is going isn’t clear!
I did wrap up a couple of my buddy reads this weekend as well, though I still (of course) have a few more books on the go:
I started FOLLOW ME by Kathleen Barber last week for a buddy read that I’m helping to host on bookstagram and I enjoyed our halfway chat on Saturday. In this one we’re following Audrey, a social media darling who has recently moved to New York to take a dream job with the Smithsonian. She rents an apartment site unseen and winds up in a basement unit with a creepy neighbor in a less than ideal setup. We also get POV chapters from Cat, Audrey’s old friend and New York native and from an unknown “Him” who has had a long term obsession with Audrey and is thrilled to now have her close.
I am also still reading and loving THE FINAL EMPIRE by Brandon Sanderson and IF YOU WANT TO MAKE GOD LAUGH by Bianca Marais.
Did you get any good reading in this weekend? What are you currently reading?
