When I asked for anthology suggestions featuring female authors. I got a couple recommendations for TOIL & TROUBLE, so when I saw it was available on my library shelf, I immediately added it to the stack of holds I was picking up. Edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe, this combines 15 short stories by 15 different female authors all centering on women and witchcraft.
Little did I know when I picked up this book in March that it would reside on my shelves for months on end, but it has been a great book to have on hand. The fifteen stories are all very different, with diverse settings and characters. It has been great to have short stories that were able to grab my attention at times when longer novels felt like too much for my varying attention span of late!
As with almost any short story collection, some stories struck a chord with more more than others, but overall I really enjoyed the entire collection. There were a good blend of authors, some that I recognized and others who were new to me. While focusing in on witch craft, the stories really are about women and female empowerment.
If you enjoy a good witchy tale, this is a collection that I would recommend!
