HEIDI by Johanna Spyri was April’s pick for the #classicsbuddyread hosted by @freefallinreader a last minute substitution after a group consensus that present days called for picking a light and uplifting read for the month. It was also a perfect pick for a book that I expected to make me happy for the recent Reading Rush readathon.
I am not sure if I ever actually read HEIDI before, though I was somewhat familiar with the story. Heidi is a little girl who is taken to live with her Grandfather in the alps after the loss of her parents. Though he was known as somewhat of a grump, Heidi quickly wins him over along with nearly everyone else she meets throughout the book. Her positivity is a magnet for everyone.
This was a great comfort read for the month. It does gloss over some things (Heidi seems enthused about her move to the mountains with little thought to the parents she’s lost), but this isn’t entirely surprising in a book for young readers. I did enjoy Heidi’s optimistic viewpoint and her selfless outlook on life.
It was nice to have another lighter classic read for this month, and one that I’ve meant to get to for a while, to keep me on track toward the #2020classics goal while still getting a bit of a break!
A childhood favorite! 🙌😍
