Monday Morning Reading Check In

Hello book friends, I hope your Monday is off to a good start! Kylee insisted on being part of my currently reading post for this week which was actually good timing. I wanted to show off my new bookmark from the Sarcastic Reader Shop. They have a lot of good designs, but this one couldn’t be more perfect for me (and Kylee).

So what book is my bookmark marking? I’m jumping into ASSASSIN’S QUEST by Robin Hobb this week as part of the #elderlingalong. This is the third book in the series and the conclusion to the first trilogy. I can’t say too much about this one without spoiling the first two in the series, but we’re continuing to follow Fitz. Fitz is a bastard son of the royal line and he possesses magic which allows him to connect to animals and both things make him a bit of an ‘other’ in most company. It took me a little bit to warm up to the series, but I loved book two and I’m eager to get further into book three!

I am participating in a team readathon challenge this week with the Around the Year in 52 Books reading challenge group that I belong to on Goodreads, so I have quite a few books on the go that I’m hoping to finish up for the team. This particular challenge is focused on answering silly questions (What was your favorite Halloween costume? If you had a boat what would you name it?) and creativity is encouraged.

THE NOTHING MAN by Catherine Ryan Howard (thank you to Blackstone Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the advanced copy) – We are reading the memoir of a woman who was the only member of her family to survive the Nothing Man when she was 12 years old. As an adult she is obsessed with finding him. Also reading along is the actual Nothing Man, now retired from his days as a killer, worried that having his media name back in print will cause him trouble. I really enjoyed the author’s REWIND last year and have heard amazing things about this one and so far it is great. This book is my answer to the question ‘how much does a polar bear weigh?’ because as far as I know the answer is nothing because I’m not about to try to talk a polar bear onto a scale!

YOU LOOK LIKE A THING AND I LOVE YOU by Janelle Shane is still underway from last week. I’ve been reading this one in chunks when I have time to sit down with both the audio and the physical copy because it has some great illustrations that you miss in the audio, though the audio is overall very well done. I’m getting a lot of good laughs out of this one.

NORTHANGER ABBEY by Jane Austen is one I’m reading for a buddy read. We had a great chat about the first half yesterday, so I’m looking forward to finishing it this week ahead of the final chat. This is on the Rory Gilmore reading list so it would fit well for the question asking about a favorite TV show!

THERE ONCE LIVED A WOMAN WHO TRIED TO KILL HER NEIGHBOR’S BABY: SCARY FAIRY TALES by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya is a translated collection of short stories. I’m only a few stories in so far and some I’ve liked more than others, but they are definitely dark and twisty. I think this one would be perfect for ‘what’s a career you would hate?’ because being a hired killer would be a crummy job!

So my main goal for reading this week is to get through my currently reading stack and read some great books to help out my team! What are you reading this week? Anything you think I should add to my TBR?
