I always love reading about places I’ve never been, so finding a book partially set in Antarctica in my adult Once Upon a Book Club book box definitely fit the bill! HOW THE PENGUINS SAVED VERONICA by Hazel Prior is not a book that had previously made it onto my radar, but finding unknown gems is one of the best parts about subscription boxes in my mind!
In HOW THE PENGUINS SAVED VERONICA, Veronica is an 85 year old woman, totally independent and completely in shape and mentally sound (as she’d be happy to tell you). Without family in her life, Veronica is starting to consider what she will do with her money in her will, even if the need is still far off. Having made contact with her estranged grandson Patrick, Veronica decides he isn’t an option, so she sets her sights on something else, the penguins.
Having seen a television show documenting the penguin studies taking place in Antarctica, Veronica makes contact with the scientists and tells them she’s essentially on her way to check out their operation. They are of course not ready to have a penguin and Antarctica novice move in to their rustic accommodations and especially not one of considerable age, but Veronica won’t take no for an answer. Soon Veronica is making herself a part of the Antarctica studies, bonding with the penguins and opening herself up to new possibilities.
This was such a fun read! Veronica was a (mostly) lovable curmudgeon with a good heart and a very strong personality. Seeing her grandson and the scientists (and even the penguins) learn to adapt to her made for an interesting story. The story went in a fairly predictable direction, but in a totally heartwarming way and I really enjoyed this as a comfort read. The characters are a bit quirky and amusing and learning a bit about the penguins along the way was a great bonus!
I really enjoyed this one and as always, really enjoyed the experience of getting to open some gifts along the way! If you are interested in subscribing DGREADS10 will give you 10% off your first order!
