Monday Morning Reading Check In

Hello and Happy Monday book friends! I am dragging a bit today, off to a slow start! Thank goodness that my morning reading post comes with coffee! The weekend was fun and started off busy. I participated in the Dewey’s Reverse 24 Hour Readathon on Friday/Saturday (though I did take a good break in the middle to get in some sleep). Saturday my pup Kylee and I headed over to a friend’s house for some exploration (for her) and wine (for me) and a fun evening all around. After all that I was exhausted yesterday and accomplished very little!

For today’s currently reading post, I’m featuring my highly anticpated book for the week, GIDEON THE NINTH by Tasmyn Muir! This has been on my shelf since it first came out and I just haven’t gotten to it. It was on my official TBR for July, but I ran out of time and audiobook credits, so I’m finally diving in this week ahead of the #MagicMayhemReads buddy read chat this weekend. Apart from the fact that this book has been described as lesbian necromancers in space (and how can that not make you curious?) I have only heard great things so I’m going in with high expectations! I get my audiobook credit for this one tomorrow, so I’ve only just started peaking into the initial pages, but I can’t wait!

I do have a few more books on the go finally:

THE SUN ALSO RISES by Ernest Hemingway is following a group of characters after World War I as they explore life and the after effects of the war. I can’t say I’m really loving this one, but it is the book picked for the #ClassicsBuddyRead on Instagram so I will be seeing this one through. Let’s just say I’m glad it is a short read!

MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is another buddy read book and I’m about halfway through this one. In 1950s Mexico, Noemí Taboada responds to a frantic and disturbing letter from her cousin. She arrives at the house where her cousin lives with her husband and his family and things definitely feel off from the beginning. It has a slow build up in the beginning, but I expect that from a book with “gothic” in the title and I’m very intrigued to see where this one is going.

FOREST OF SOULS by Lori M. Lee is my most recent addition to the currently reading shelf. This one arrived in the June Fairy Loot box and I decided to join in on their hosted readalong this week. Sirscha Ashwyn is a determined young woman, training to become a royal spy to make something of herself. When her best friend is killed in an attack, something changes in Sirscha and suddenly her best friend is alive again and Sirscha doesn’t know how or why. I’m only five chapters in and this book has me intrigued. Lots of politics and magic systems to learn and a creepy forest setting yet to be explored!

I’m looking forward to reading more of all of these a lot and I have a couple other buddy reads planned for this week too. Thankfully I’m diving into a 25in10 style readathon with some friends on bookstagram to help keep me motivated. What are you starting off reading this week?
