Hello and another how is it already Monday again post from me! For today’s Monday morning check in, I bring you two books. This is because I started the weekend reading MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and A SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB’S GUIDE TO SLAYING VAMPIRES by Grady Hendrix and I finished the weekend still reading these two which is not my norm. I am very much enjoying them both, there were just a lot of distractions this weekend – good and the bad.
On the good side, I got to spend Saturday out and about with my furry pal Kylee. We made a trek to my parents’ house for a puppy play date with their dog. I met up with my BFF and we went to my favorite used bookstore (the one I’ve been going to since elementary school so a LONG time ago), hit a Starbucks drive thru and went for curbside pickup at the cupcake shop. This was the first time I’ve been to any of these places since the very beginning of the year when it seemed like 2020 would be a normal year. We finished up with some cocktails and an outdoor dinner while playing with Kylee for a fantastic day.
Sunday was full of buddy read chats, readathon announcements (looking forward to the #BookoplAthon in September) and live shows with a bit of reading in the evening. Also sun and heat and did I mention it was hot? I had the AC running most of the day and the thermostat never showed anything under 84 degrees until the sun went down and of course they’ve got us under a notice from the electric company to conserve energy in the next few days to prevent blackouts (my power did go out briefly Saturday night). So today I’m moving from room to room trying to find the coolest spots possible to try to stay less than overheated!
So in terms of the books I’m reading:
THE SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB’S GUIDE TO SLAYING VAMPIRES by Grady Hendrix is a a fun twists on the typical vampire story. We’re following Patricia, a house wife with a thirst for something exciting to happen. And something exciting does, her neighbor attacks her and bites off her ear! When the woman dies, her odd nephew moves in and things get even more interesting. Something strange is stalking local children and Patricia thinks she knows the truth, but no one believes her. This is dark and a bit gory at times, but over all a lot of fun!
KINGDOM OF SOULS by Rena Barron is my current audiobook read. We’re following Arrah, a young woman from a long line of witch doctors, but her magic hasn’t developed as it should have by her age. She is ashamed, but still holds out hope that there is more to her than just a ‘normal’ girl. Around her, children are mysteriously disappearing and something dark is going on. I’m really enjoying this one so far, though I’m not too far into it. The audio is good as well!
MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silivia Moreno-Garcia is one I talked about last week, so won’t go back into it much. I’m at the halfway mark and I am enjoying the atmospheric writing. I think things are going to start picking up soon, too!
I have a feeling this is going to be a long (and hot) week, but at least I have some good books to fall back on to hopefully distract me! What are you starting off reading this week?
