I really loved MY LADY JANE by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, so I was excited to hear about the third in the Lady Janies series, MY CALAMITY JANE. Each book takes a figure from history or literature and gives their “real” story with a humorous and supernatural twist!
MY CALAMITY JANE of course focuses on the Calamity Jane of old. In 1876 when the west was wild and America was full of gunslingers and garou (think werewolves) though the history books may have edited some of that out. Calamity is part garou hunter and part star of the Wild Bill’s Traveling Show, determined to make herself the heroine (hero-eene) of her own story. Joining Jane in her pursuits is a cast of familiar faces of the wild west with famed marksman Frank Butler and an Annie Oakley who will have you wanting to break out your musical soundtrack!
I really loved this book and I highly recommend the audio for it! These books bring so much humor, fun references and a lot of character and the audio does a great job of conveying this. The authors step out of story to speak to the reader on occasion and it has just the right level of snarkiness that I love. I think I maybe still hold MY LADY JANE as my favorite of the series, but this is a close second.
For me, the Annie Get Your Guns references really stole the show. I had a chance to see the musical on Broadway many years ago with a dear friend with Reba McEntire in the lead role and seeing the references to that in the text amused me no end! I definitely recommend giving this one a read and a listen!
