Happy Monday everyone! Though a holiday for some today in the U.S., it is unfortunately another back at work Monday for me. This weekend passed far too quickly, even though I really didn’t do much. I had a few book chats and a couple of live shows all for buddy read/readalongs on Saturday and Sunday, but other than that I got in some good reading time. We finally had a bit of a break in the weather with some cooler days and I’m enjoying it while I can. It is supposed to be back up in the 90s later this week.
For my current reading, I am about 100 pages into A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by V.E. Schwab and I am really enjoying it. This is a reread for me since I did read this first book in the series ages ago and I remember liking it, but I didn’t pick up the rest of the series at the time and I definitely need the refresher before continuing. I am buddy reading the Shades of Magic series with a couple of friends on Bookstagram.
A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC is set in a London which is actually made up of multiple parallel worlds. In Red London, magic flourishes and our central character Kell was raised by the royal family. He acts as an ambassador to the other worlds with a bit of smuggling on the side. Grey London is a world where magic has almost entirely been forgotten and most apart from the royal family don’t even know that other Londons exist. White London is said to be a struggling, dying world full of upheaval. Black London is a dead. At this point in the reread, we’re still getting our feet wet in the world building and character introduction, but Kell is an interesting character to follow. The story is coming back to me more as I go along and I look forward to continuing on in the series!
Alongside this read, I just started WORDS OF RADIANCE by Brandon Sanderson which is book two in The Stormlight Archive series and the next book in the readalong of the series. After watching the live show for the first book, THE WAY OF KINGS, I was extra motivated to start this one. THE WAY OF KINGS was enjoyable but slow to get through, so I’m really working to start this one earlier in the month. Taking off from where the first book ended, it does seem to be a bit quicker going so far since I already know the characters and the settings.
To balance out the fantasies I have going, I also picked up THE DAUGHTERS OF FOXCOTE MANOR which I received in a Once Upon a Book Club box a while back. I have really only dipped into the first pages of this one, but it is meant to be a historical, gothic mystery type book. While I’m not expecting a super fast paced thriller, I think it makes a good edition to my goal to read more dark and thriller type books this month. A baby is found and taken in by a family and they decide to secretly keep her. A body is found which shatters the illusion of a perfect family. Years later, answers must be found. I don’t know much beyond that, but it sounds like a great setup!
I hope your Monday is off to a lovely start! What are you reading today?
