Book Review

LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn

Rating: 5 / 5

I received LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn in my Owlcrate box and I have since seen nothing but rave reviews. When it was announced as the #diversebuddyread pick for January, I immediately signed up.

LEGENDBORN follows Bree Matthews, a 16 year old girl who has been accepted to an early admission program which allows her to join a group of advanced high school students living and learning at the university in Chapel Hill. She’s still reeling from the death of her mother, so it seems like the perfect escape. During her first night on campus (and her first rebellion, sneaking out of bounds) she witnesses students using magic, her first introduction to the secret society of the Legendborn.

Bree starts to realize that she has some magic of her own which in turn slowly reveals that there was more to the story of her mother’s death than the simple car accident she has believed. In order to find out more, she makes plans to infiltrate the Legendborn, competing against those raised in the magic and traditions to earn a spot among the elite.

I didn’t exactly know what to expect when I first picked up this novel, but I was immediately hooked! It is a twist on the tales of King Arthur and it is packed with magic, complicated relationships and action. The Legendborn are tasks with protecting the world from magical beings who invade to do harm to the humans who never know what is going on outside of their comprehension. While they have healers to help them after battle, there is a very real danger that the healers could be too late and not everyone will get a happy ending.

This is a 500 page novel and I managed to read the whole thing in less than 24-hours. The author does a fantastic job of keeping up the pace from the beginning and bringing in new twists and reveals as the book goes along. My only disappointment in this book is knowing that I have to wait probably nearly a year for the second as yet untitled installment. This one did a good job of wrapping up the story but leaving plenty of room to continue.

I highly recommend this one to the fantasy fans out there!
