Book Review

HOW LONG ‘TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH? by N.K. Jemisin

Rating: 4.5 / 5

HOW LONG ‘TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH? by N.K. Jemisin was the February book pick for the Deep Dark Reads buddy read on Instagram. I loved N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy so I was excited to read more of her work.

HOW LONG ‘TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH? begins with the author’s explanation that once upon a time she didn’t believe she could write short stories. The rest of the book proceeds to prove just how wrong she was! The book combines a lot of various genres, perspectives and settings. There are glimpses of utopia and dystopia, a return to the Broken Earth Trilogy with one of her stories and the origins of the author’s THE CITY WE BECAME in another story.

As with any short story collection, there were some stories that really stood out to me more than others, but there weren’t any stories in the mix that I didn’t enjoy overall. I was very impressed with Jemisin’s ability to tackle such a wide variety and to make each story in the collection unique. I listened to the audio for parts of the collection and the use of multiple narrators also helped with this while listening.

This collection only solidifies my standing as a N.K. Jemisin fan and it leaves me even more exited to explore more of her work!
