I have been wanting to get to the audiobook for LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND by Rumaan Alam for far too long! Two of my booksta besties have VERY different takes on their enjoyment of the book, so when I saw a skip the line copy available at my library, I had to finally add this to my reading in March!
LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND begins with a family enjoying some quiet vacation time in a remote area of Long Island, well removed from the city. When the rental property’s owners show up unannounced in the middle of the night after something has happened, they are quite understandably upset at the disruption to their rental contract. Still, a few emergency alerts on their phones before their ability to connect to the outside world goes dark tells them that something definitely has gone wrong even though they do not know what.
I can absolutely see why this book would not be for everyone, but I fall into the category of those who actually did really enjoy it! First off the audiobook is very well done (I do really like Marin Ireland as a narrator). Secondly, the thing that I think puts many off of this type of story is the ambiguity and that is something I don’t mind in a book when well done (and here, going into the read expecting ambiguity I think helped).
The author doesn’t give us the answers to what exactly is going on in the world. Instead, we get little snippets of things that are happening outside of our characters’ knowledge which add to the mystery and intrigue. Apart from that, we really are limited to what the characters each witness in the world immediately around them where they are essentially cut off from everything apart from the knowledge that something is very wrong.
This definitely isn’t a read for everyone, but I loved the creepiness and the imagination of this one!
