Happy Monday book friends! I hope your week is off to a fantastic start! My weekend was mostly spent lazing around and reading with the pup which was pretty okay with me. We had a bit of a heat wave over the weekend (California skipping right over spring and heading into summer for a bit). Though I am NOT ready for summer temps, I actually like this kind of weather where you get a nice warm and sunny day, but it cools off a lot at night so the house stays nice and cool!
For today’s reading check in, I have the perfect mug and book pairing! I am currently buddy reading VICIOUS, book one in V.E. Schwab’s Villains series which pairs perfectly with my Villains mug from an Illumicrate box last year. I have been eager to read this series, and only partially because I wanted to match my mug!
This series has two main characters, Victor and Eli. Ten years ago, Eli became interested in the origin story of Extraordinary people, people with super powers and set out to find out how EOs become super. His college roommate Victor gets wrapped into the quest as well. In the present day Victor has just gotten out of prison and is hunting down Eli, once his friend but now his mortal enemy. Eli meanwhile is up to no good of his own.
I am about halfway through VICIOUS and I am hooked! Things get very crazy very quickly in this one. So far we’re mostly getting Victor’s point of view, but he and Eli are both at best morally grey and I am loving it! Book two in this duology, VENGEFUL, will be on my April TBR for sure!
In other reading, I have started another from Brandon Sanderson’s backlist with THE HERO OF AGES which will finish off the first Mistborn trilogy. I loved the first two books in this trilogy and the third is keeping me just as hooked. I am mostly doing this one on audio and I am flying through it! For a 700+ page book it reads really quickly.
I also have a few books that I’m doing for tours and buddy reads that I’m in the middle of. THE TRUTH AND OTHER HIDDEN THINGS by Lea Geller (out 4/6/2021 from Lake Union Publishing) finds Bells Walker over 40, pregnant thanks to an IUD failure and moving to a new town thanks to her husband not getting tenure. She starts a blog talking about some of the local life and local parents under an alias… what could go wrong?
IF SHE DIES by Erik Therme (out now) follows Tess, a woman still lost in grief after the death of her daughter nine months ago. The man driving the car that killed her daughter is in prison and Tess has taken to watching the family he left behind, including his daughter Eve. From the synopsis I know that Eve goes missing and suspicion falls on Tess. I’m eager to see where this one is heading! I do really feel for Tess as her grief really does come through on the page.
Lastly I’m reading HANA KHAN CARRIES ON by Uzma Jalaluddin. Hana is a young Muslim woman whose family owns a halal restaurant, but her real goal is to get into broadcasting. For now, she lives that dream through an internship and a podcast under an alias. She has started some friendly banter with a fan, but she prefers to keep things anonymous. When another family comes in to open a new, polished halal restaurant in direct competition with her family’s restaurant, tempers flare and things get complicated. This is a fun read so far with some definite You’ve Got Mail vibes.
What are you reading this week to finish up the month? I’d love to hear!
