Monday Reading Check In

I received a complementary ARC of WHERE HOPE COMES FROM by Nikita Gill from Hachette Books.

Happy first Monday of May, book friends! I hope your month started off with a fantastic weekend and fantastic reads! I had a nice lunch out on Saturday and some good book chats over the weekend. I’m really not ready for another week and I definitely didn’t get enough sleep last night, but coffee and fresh bagels are helping me through!

For today’s currently reading book, I have started WHERE HOPE COMES FROM by Nikita Gill. This is a poetry collection born out of the difficulties of the last year (and more) from this pandemic and the ways it impacted life for everyone. It addresses issues of isolation, depression and very importantly hope! It also takes on mixed formats from short form poems to lists and narratives. It is also full of gorgeous illustrations. I picked this up just to read a page or two and found myself sucked in. I don’t read a ton of poetry, but I need to change that. I look forward to continuing this throughout the month!

I had a good reading weekend as well and already finished off a couple great reads, but I do of course have a few more that are still in progress.

A SPECIAL PLACE FOR WOMEN by Laura Hankin (out 5/11/21 from Berkley) is one I am reading for a buddy read this week. I am at the halfway point and excited for our chat this afternoon. We’re following Jillian, a reporter reeling in the loss of her mother and her job. She’s desperately in need of a new big story to pitch so when an opening at a friend’s restaurant gives her an in to a super secret, super selective club just for influential women, she goes undercover to view this club from the inside.

HOLLOW KINGDOM by Kira Jane Buxton is a book I won a copy of a while back so I was glad to finally pick it back up. Told from the perspective of animals, mainly a domesticated crow, it tells a story of a world fallen apart when humans have succumbed to a zombie virus. It is a bit weird and a lot funny and I’m really enjoying the read so far!

THIS STRANGE WAY OF DYING by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a short story collection I picked up for #ReadTheWorld21. I’m only a couple stories in, but I am enjoying it. I can see some of the atmospheric writing here that I loved in MEXICAN GOTHIC.

April was a bit rough for me off and on for reading, so I’m really pleased with how May has started! What are you reading this week? I’d love to hear!
