The #SaturdayBookstaClub group read A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER by Holly Jackson last year and really enjoyed it, so we decided to put the extra Saturday in May to use to read the sequel, GOOD GIRL, BAD BLOOD. I’ve been holding on to this one since it came out in the UK so I was eager to dive back into Pip’s world.
GOOD GIRL, BAD BLOOD picks up not long after the first book ends. Pip is still feeling the consequences of all that went on with her senior project looking into the murder of Andie Bell, seeking to prove that Sal Singh was not the murderer as everyone has thought. She went through a lot with that case and developed it into a popular podcast. Still, she has learned a lot of lessons and is leaving that life behind to focus back on her schoolwork, her friends and her family.
When a new case comes up close to home and the police aren’t proving helpful, Pip is helpless to avoid being sucked in. On the night of the memorial service honoring the memory of Andie and Sal, a young man named Jamie, the brother of Pip’s friend, goes missing. He’s had a rocky past so the police blow it off as just him skipping town, but Jamie’s family doesn’t believe that to be true. Soon Pip is conducting interviews and uncovering secrets once again.
I wound up picking this book up on audio and I am so glad that I did. I really think that listening on audio boosted my rating with this one. There is a full cast with a lot of production added to give the story a true podcast feeling.
I really appreciated that Pip learned from her experiences in book one and that the traumas she went through over the past year really did impact her, her mental health and her relationships. You can see her struggling to return to a normal life even as she knows that life will not be the same.
I appreciated Pip’s loyalty to her friends and those she cares about and how that did manage to suck her back in to another mystery. The mystery did keep me guessing throughout whether Jamie could be found alive and well and what exactly was behind his disappearance. It took some twists I did not see coming!
I am very excited for the third installment in this series to come out, AS GOOD AS DEAD. It is due out in August I believe in the UK, though I’m sure it will be a while for it to make it to the US so I can check it out on audio again.
