MASTER OF ONE by Jaida Jones & Danielle Bennett

Rating: 4 / 5

I received this beautiful special edition of MASTER OF ONE by by Jaida Jones & Danielle Bennett in a Fairy Loot box and I picked it up to fulfill a couple readathon prompts at the end of May.

MASTER OF ONE begins with Rags. Rags is a skilled thief, but he has been caught by the Queensguard. After being caught he has been forced into service to find a fae relic which lies behind a series of deadly traps by an evil sorcerer. No one else has made it very far in the pursuit of what is sought. When Rags finds the relic, an actual living fae prince named Shining Talon, Rags gets sucked into a quest he couldn’t have imagined.

For a 550 page book, this book was a very fast read and I consumed it all in about a day. The book begins with Rags on a solo quest to survive the traps leading him to the relic. Over the course of the novel, the cast of characters grow as more join in on the search for lost treasures. I really liked how characters were introduced so you weren’t overwhelmed initially with a ton of characters to learn all at once. The book begins with Rags as narrator for all of the chapters and then gradually shifts to multiple POV.

This includes a bit of everything with humor, adventure, puzzles, unique magical creatures, queer characters, and slow burn romance. There were a few places where the pace got a bit slow, but that was sort of appropriate to the plot where the characters themselves had some downtime between events.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to the fantasy fans. It does work quite well as a stand alone though I gather that the authors do have a potential sequel planned.
