Book Review

HAVENFALL by Sara Holland

Rating: 4 / 5

I received HAVENFALL by Sara Holland in an Illumicrate box some time back and have been wanting to pick it up. When I had a prompt for gold on the cover in a recent readathon, it was the perfect time to finally read it!

HAVENFALL is set in a place in Colorado where the different magical realms all connect to our magicless world. The Inn at Havenfall has bene part of Maddie’s family for generations with her grandmother and now her uncle standing at the helm, negotiating between the different people who come through the portals. Maddie is joining her uncle on her summer break from college, never expecting what the summer would bring.

It is the time of year when dignitaries from each of the worlds come together to reaffirm their peace, but the peace is at risk. The decision was made some years back to block off one of the worlds, but Maddie is convinced that a creature from that world killed her brother. Her mother is currently on death row for the crime. When more people begin to be attacked, everyone suspects everyone else and Maddie winds up holding the reigns, trying to find out what is going on and who she can trust.

This was a really fun read! I was able to pick up on some of the twists fairly early on in the story, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of reading it. There were some secrets that I didn’t guess and the author did a good job of creating some layered characters who Maddie couldn’t fully know whether or not to trust.

The sequel PHOENIX FLAME is out as of March and I am intrigued to pick it up potentially at some point, but the reviews lead me to believe that some things are left unresolved which has me thinking it probably isn’t one I’d rush to pick up.
