I received a complimentary copy of WE ARE THE BRENNANS by Tracey Lange from Celadon Books!
Happy holiday Monday, my friends! For those who have the day off today, I hope you are having a wonderful long weekend and for everyone else I hope your week is off to a good start! I’m taking full advantage of the holiday today, doing my engagement and reading out on the patio with my current read and my cold brew.
It’s been a nice, not too hot weekend (though I still managed to get a sunburn in a less than half hour walk with Kylee yesterday) and we made it through the craziest fireworks day of the year! Kylee didn’t enjoy the show we had right outside our window, but she managed to stay fairly calm as long as she was with me. The neighbors did put on quite the show though!
I am currently reading WE ARE THE BRENNANS (out 8/3/2021 from Celadon books). This book focuses on an Irish family beginning with Sunday Brennan who makes the very poor decision to get behind the wheel while drunk and wakes up in the hospital. Her older brother Denny flies to California and convinces Sunday to return home to New York where she must face her family and her ex Kale who is still Denny’s business partner. Denny is struggling with this marriage and the business, their father is grappling with the early stages of dementia, and something happened between Kale and Sunday years ago that isn’t yet clear.
The book shifts POV between the different characters, each character continuing exactly where the last POV character left off. I wasn’t entirely sure if I was in the mood for heavy drama with characters making bad decisions (and there are quite a few of those), but I have found myself hooked on learning more about this family. I’m about a third of the way in and I’m hoping to finish today!
In other reading, I am about halfway into WHILE WE WERE DATING by Jasmine Guillory (out from Berkley on 7/13/21). This is the sixth book in her The Wedding Date series, but can be read as a standalone (I’ve only read the first two books in the series previously). Ben works in advertising and Anna is the star talent for a new cell phone campaign, but sparks fly quickly between them even though neither thinks a romantic entitlement while working together is the best of ideas. I have a sneaking suspicion this is heading for a happily ever after (not sure what would give me that idea, of course, lol).
And my current audiobook (which I also have in print thanks to Random House) is THE WOLF AND THE WOODSMAN by Ava Reid. I’m less than a chapter in to this one and I’m going in pretty blind, so don’t have a lot to say about it yet. We’re following Évike, the only woman among her people without magical abilities. They are preparing for the Woodsmen to come and take one of them to sacrifice and Évike has just been told that she’s the one they are coming to take. I am definitely hooked on this one already to see where it is going to take me!
July has been off to a good reading start for me, largely thanks to the long weekend with plans to stay inside and away from the loud fireworks! What are you currently reading on this lovely Monday?
