Book Review

THE GILDED ONES by Namina Forna

Rating: 4 / 5

I received this beautiful edition of THE GILDED ONES by Namina Forna in a Fairy Loot box and it was a perfect pick when I pulled a prompt to read the prettiest book on my TBR. The original cover is stunning, but the gilded additions that Fairy Loot added really put it over the top.

THE GILDED ONES follows Deka, a 16 year old preparing for a blood ceremony which will tell her what her future will be. Deka has always been a bit different, having a strong intuition about things to come that put other people off. This once she really wants to be like everyone else, but the blood ceremony reveals that her blood runs gold which is a sign of impurity.

A woman comes to her and gives her a choice to avoid the fate that belongs to those with impure blood. If Deka chooses, she may leave with this woman to join the ranks of girls like her, with powers both like and unlike hers, serving in the emperor’s army. Deka decides to take the offer and she seeks to fit in among a new group, but not everything is of course as it first may seem.

I really enjoyed reading this book, but I also was left wanting a bit more. I enjoyed Deka’s twisty journey to find answers about the world and what threatens it, a journey the reader is on as well. There are a lot of answers given in the later portions of the books, but it does take a while to get there. I think I would have liked to get a better sense of the world as a whole as well.

Overall I really enjoyed Deka and her journey and will definitely look to read more from Namina Forna in the future!
