Book Review

I didn’t know much about THE ONES WE’RE MEANT TO FIND by Joan He prior to receiving a copy. When I made a last minute decision to join a recent #polarthon weekend readathon with a prompt about climate change, this book was frequently mentioned and I decided to move it up my TBR. I of course had to pair it with my shelter rescue pup who was most definitely one I was meant to find!

THE ONES WE’RE MEANT TO FIND follows two young women. Cee is on an abandoned island. She has been there for three years without any knowledge of what came before. She only has a vocabulary bot as company must live off the very few provisions she has. She has faint recollections of a sister named Kay calling to her to find a way off the island and across the waters.

Kasey lives in an eco-city, set against a backdrop where the world has been destroyed by pollution and natural disasters brought on by climate change. In exchange for safety and healthy living, the people must live a life beneficial to the environment including living part of their time in virtual reality to live a zero footprint life. As someone who loves science and technology, this life suits Kasey, but her sister Celia much preferred the natural world and was determined to experience reality. Problem is, Celia set out and never returned.

I had no idea what this book was going to be about when I picked it up, but I was instantly looked to both Cee’s and Kasey’s stories. I loved the juxtaposition of the two worlds they lived in – roughing it for Cee and the polished technology based world of Kasey.

This is a sci-fi dystopian story with pretty dismal look at our future with man’s impact on the environment, but it is also largely a mystery story. The author does an excellent job of slowly revealing the background of both our main characters’ stories in a way that kept me hooked! She managed some great twists, not all of which I saw coming.

This was a really fun, fly through it kind of read with some serious subjects mixed in. It is one I would absolutely recommend!
