Book Review

BLOOD & HONEY, GODS & MONSTERS by Shelby Mahurin

Rating: 4 / 5

I read SERPENT & DOVE by Shelby Mahurin with a group of friends last April and got BLOOD & HONEY when it came out, but hadn’t picked it up. I decided that GODS & MONSTERS coming out to finish off the trilogy made it time to finally get to the rest of the series. I decided to do a couple mini reviews for books two and three.

BLOOD & HONEY start off a bit rough for me. Apart from needing to get myself back into the characters and the story after a year and a half between books, I struggled with the audiobook. The narrator for the male lead Reid voiced him in a way that made him seem extra young and extra whiney to me. This is the same narrator who voiced CHRISTINE by Stephen King and I enjoyed that one because I felt the voice worked for the character, I just didn’t feel like it worked for Reid. Complicating this is the fact that Reid spends a lot of time buried in angst in the first half or so of the book. All that said, I wound up really enjoying the book as a whole. The action really picked up at the end and it left me eager to pick up GODS & MONSTERS.

GODS & MONSTERS is the final book in the series and in many ways it felt very familiar to the first book for reasons I can’t get into due to spoilers. This one brought back a lot more of the fun banter I enjoyed in the series as well as some good action. The pacing felt a lot more consistent throughout this one too. I stuck with reading in print for this one and definitely was glad that I made that decision. These books are fairly big, but they read really quickly.

Overall I really enjoyed this series and will definitely read more from Shelby Mahurin in the future.
