Book Review

THE MARY SHELLEY CLUB by Goldy Moldavsky

Rating: 4.5 / 5

I received THE MARY SHELLEY CLUB by Goldy Moldavsky in my YA Once Upon a Book Club box. I had seen this one around quite a bit with great reviews and it really had me interested to read it!

THE MARY SHELLEY CLUB follows Rachel. She’s the new girl at Manchester Prep and she’s eager o make a new start after surviving something horrible. She is trying to make new friends but finding it difficult. When she winds up in the middle of a prank between students, she’s fingered as the culprit and made to feel even more of an outsider.

Rachel has developed an obsession with horror movies, so when she hears about a secret club on campus, the Mary Shelley Club, she is determined to find out more about this group of seemingly very different peers who all share her movie love. It turns out these students like to take the fear from he screen to real life with pranks. It all seems like fun until things continue to escalate and it seems that someone sinister is after them.

This was such a fun read and an absolute page-turner that I flew through in basically a day. I really enjoyed the creativity of the club’s pranks (even if they did get to be more than a bit mean at times). I also liked the variety of characters who all came together in the love of horror movies. It was interesting trying to see through their various personas, who they were at school vs. who they are the club. Learning more about Rachel’s horrifying past also kept me glued to the pages, wanting more!

This is a fun one to go into without knowing too much about the book and reading it along with the gifts from the sub box just added more fun. Through I love that Once Upon a Book Club introduces me to new to me books, I was thrilled to get a book that was high on my TBR too!
