After reading and really enjoying THE SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB’S GUIDE TO SLAYING VAMPIRES and FINAL GIRLS by Grady Hendrix, I knew I needed to go back into the backlist for more books! This VHS style cover kept catching my eye, so I finally picked up MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM last month.
MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM is set in the 80’s and is full of nostalgic references from that time period. Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since grade school, so when Gretchen starts to act differently when they start high school, Abby is the one who notices first. As things continue, Abby is fully convinced that Gretchen has a demon inside her and she sets out to save her friend.
I think this is one that it is best to go into without a ton of information because it is a wild ride and it is best to just hold on and go with the craziness. I definitely did and I really enjoyed the ride! The author did a fantastic job setting the historical stage (must we really call the 80’s historical?!) with the roller skates and movie references and so many things that I am old enough to remember well!
This is definitely a dark read with trigger warnings for violence, gore, death, etc. Still, it is also a great story of friendship. I loved the idea of these friends knowing each other so well that Abby spots the problem well before anyone else notices. Abby goes above and beyond to try to help her friend, even putting herself in danger.
I am very glad that I picked this one up in the fall – it is perfect for spooky season!
