KINGDOM OF THE WICKED by Kerri Maniscalco

Rating: 4.5 / 5

I recieved this gorgeous edition of KINGDOM OF THE WICKED by Kerri Maniscalco in a Fairy Loot box and finally managed to add it to my reading list in October.

KINGDOM OF THE WICKED begins with two sisters, twins Emilia and Vittoria. They are witches (streghe) who live their lives as human, keeping their magic hidden. When Vittoria is murdered, it is Emilia who finds her brutalized body. She is determined to find out who killed her sister and why. Emilia meets Wrath, a wicked prince of hell, but one who says he is on the same side. He has been tasked with finding out who has killed Vittoria along with other local women. Emilia has been warned against the princes of hell, but she can’t help but be drawn to Wrath as a path to answers and more.

First off… don’t start this book hungry. Emilia’s family have a Sicilian restaurant and I still remember drooling over the food descriptions as I was driving home from work! It is a relatively minor part of the book, but the author really did a fantastic job setting the scene of the family restaurant. I enjoyed the mixture this book brought of food and family and mystery alongside the fantasy elements of the magic.

As things shift from the family friendly setting of the restaurant to the sinister discovery of Vittoria’s body and the investigation to follow, the author also does a fantastic job of establishing the darkness and the lengths Emilia will go to to understand what has happened to her sister. She begins to ask questions about what she has known about her family, herself, and her magic and starts to uncover truths that have been hidden.

I was very quickly drawn into this book and left wanting more – good thing my procrastination meant that I was reading this book just as the sequel KINGDOM OF THE CURSED was being released. I really enjoyed this book on audio so I have the audio for the next book on hold already and I look forward to reading it soon!
