Book Review

THE MASK FALLING by Samantha Shannon

Rating: 4.5 / 5

I have been really loving THE BONE SEASON and the entire series by Samantha Shannon, so was both very excited and also nervous to pick up THE MASK FALLING. Excited because I really enjoy reading these books, but nervous because it’s the most recent release and after finishing I’m now with all the other fans waiting (for probably quite some time) for another book!

THE BONE SEASON is set in a futuristic London with Victorian aesthetics. Matic (aka clairvoyance) is banned. Those who have magic have formed underground gangs to regulate themselves with clan politics and money making ventures. In book one we followed Paige as she was arrested for her power and taken into captivity. I really can’t explain anything more after that because the series takes some abrupt twists and turns that would make everything that comes after a big spoiler.

One thing that I really love about this series is the way the books pick up pretty much right where the last book finished off. This means that the author really delves into every situation and doesn’t gloss over the after effects of what happened in a prior book. These characters are put through a lot and the impact of that trauma really makes a difference to the story line.

This book marks a bit of a shift from the pervious books with some cast members not quite as present and a new location, but I really enjoyed it very much. I will be eagerly waiting to see what happens next when the next book comes out… eventually!
