I received a gifted audiobook for FORTUNA SWORN by K.J. Sutton for an honest review. Thank you to Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Rating: 4 / 5
FORTUNA SWORN follows the title character. Fortuna is a Nightmare, a supernatural capable of using one’s fears against them at a touch. She’s also the last of her kind after her brother, also a Nightmare, disappeared two years ago. Her promise to their mother to always take care of her brother weighs heavily on her mind. She is living in the human world, but is constantly on the look out for new leads.
A new lead comes up in the form of a faerie named Collith who says he knows where she can find her brother. Fortuna knows that the fae can’t be trusted and she’s wary of his offer to help her in exchange for her hand in marriage. Still, she feels she doesn’t have any choice but to agree because she is willing to sacrifice herself to save her brother.
I have been hearing about this series from several trusted sources for quite a while and I have participated in a few events on BookTube which have included the author, so my curiosity about the series has been peaked. The romance side of fantasy isn’t necessarily where I lean into my reading, but when I saw that the audiobook for FORTUNA SWORN was available on Netgalley, I decided that I needed to see what the hype was all about and I am very glad that I did!
This is the first book in a series, so there is definitely some setup being done, but the story really managed to hook me in right away. I found the writing and the depiction of the fae realm to be very atmospheric and I really liked the depiction of the protagonist’s struggle balancing her brother’s needs and her own. I also have really enjoyed learning about the different type of supernatural beings and their abilities and the politics of the realm.
I am really glad that I picked this one up! It has been described as being perfect for fans of ACOTAR and I do think that this is one I’d recommend to fans of that series!
