A SPINDLE SPLINTERED by Alix E. Harrow is a twisted retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Zinnia is turning 21, an age that holds special meaning because she has long been diagnosed with a fatal condition and she knows her time is limited. Her best friend Charm is throwing her a party themed around her favorite fairytale. Zinnia never expects that touching a spindle will have her actually transporting to a world of fairytales with another sleeping beauty. A MIRROR MENDED brings Zinnia on a new adventure with a venture into a new fairytale, that of Snow White’s Evil Queen, a woman in search of a new twist to her story.
I have really enjoyed Alix E. Harrow’s previous novels, especially THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY, so these novellas were high on my list to pick up! Both of these books were quick to suck me in. I love a good fairytale retelling and seeing what an author chooses to do in giving the well known story a unique twist. I really think Alix E. Harrow did an excellent job finding new twists. She puts women at the center of the story, women who can save themselves without need for a prince to save the day.
While the books work as standalones as there isn’t a ton of overlap, it is absolutely worth reading both and reading them in order. These editions are absolutely gorgeous as well, full of beautiful illustrated pages. They are both quick reads easy to fly through.
