THE SOUL OF AN OCTOPUS by Sy Montgomery

Rating: 4 / 5

THE SOUL OF AN OCTOPUS: A SURPRISING EXPPLORATION INTO THE WONDER OF CONSCIOUSNESS by Sy Montgomery is the author’s exploration into the world of fascinating octopuses. Throughout the book she gets to know a number of different octopus who make a distinct impression on her life. These creatures are extremely intelligent with distinct personalities, both in captivity and in the wild. Science has much to learn from and about these creatures.

This was a very entertaining read and a perfect pick for the #NonfictionBookParty photo prompt for exploring the world of animals from @theocbookgirl. I have always found octopuses to be fascinating creatures and reading the fictional account of an octopus in REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt prompted me to bump this nonfiction account up my TBR this month!

This book looks at a number of octopuses and the way they different from each other in personality and quirks. The author narrates the audiobook and you can hear the joy and fascination from her throughout. I would say this is more of a collection of anecdotes and stories than a true scientific look at the animals’ consciousness, but there is so much about these animals that is fascinating. She does go into facts about their hunting, eating, and mating habits and more. There is also quite a lot about her travels to see them in the wild and the other people who care for the aquariums where those in her stories are housed.

This really was an interesting read and it is one I would recommend to those who enjoy nature and animal stories!
