I received THE OCEANOGRAPHY OF THE MOON by Glendy Vanderah in my Once Upon a Book Club box. I had heard good things about this author so was excited to give this one at try.
THE OCEANOGRAPHY OF THE MOON follows Riley, a young woman who moved to live with her cousins after the deaths of her aunt and her mother as a girl. The Mays family farm is a place of comfort and peace for her. Now it is more than twenty years later and she’s beginning to want to branch out of her comfort zone a bit. We are also following Vaughn, an author with bestselling novels on bookstore shelves, but a case of writer’s block. He winds up meeting the Mays family and is welcomed in to their eccentric brood.
I didn’t know a lot about this book going into it, but I was quickly sucked in. I found this one on Kindle Unlimited with the audio included, so wound up listening to this one and really enjoyed it. I loved the Mays family and how open and welcoming they were, both to take in Riley and help her to deal with her grief, and also to welcome in Vaughn. The Mays’ son has also been through a lot of bullying for his choices to wear dresses, but I loved the way the family and Vaughn embraced him.
This is a book that deals with some heavy topics, grief at the forefront. It also has some twists along the way that were hard on the heart a bit. Still I think the author handled these well. I did see some of the turns coming, but not all of them which I also enjoyed!
This is a book I likely would not have picked up as soon if it wasn’t coming in a sub box, so I am very glad that Once Upon a Book Club included this one! If you are interested in subscribing to any of the Once Upon A Book Club fun boxes, DGREADS10 will give you 10% off your first order!
