Rating: 4 / 5

BLIND TIGER is set during prohibition in a small Texas town where moonshine is big business. The story follows Laurel, a young woman left alone with her father-in-law. She’s a strong woman determined to make a good life for herself. Thatcher is a man returning from war and heading back to his home and his old cowboy life who winds up in town along the way. The day he shows up, a woman he happened to have been seen talking to goes missing and he finds himself accused.

I really enjoyed this one a lot. There was a bit of romance, a bit of history, and a bit of suspense tied up in the moonshine trade which kept me hooked throughout the book. I enjoyed the character of Laurel, a strong and independent thinking woman for a modern audience, but in a way that fit with the historical setting. While the moonshine trade is a bit of a morally gray area, she gets involved with making smart business decisions along the way.

I wouldn’t say the suspense part of this book delivered any big surprises, but it was an enjoyable read even so. As one can imagine, the world of the moonshine industry and blind tigers (illegal drinking establishments with booze, women and gambling) has some dark characters and there are trigger warnings for child death, violence, and sexual abuse.

This is a time period I enjoy reading, though I haven’t read too much from this time. I would definitely pick up more historical fiction from Sandra Brown!
