PULSE is a cross genre book, dipping into sci-fi/dystopian, thriller and horror set in the not too distant future of 2040. The story brings multiple points of view and centers on multiple issues including consumerism and our reliance on technology and the ways we’re impacting our planet. Though written in a future setting, many of the issues are clearly relatable to our current world (politics, climate, activism, etc.).
B.A. Bellec’s debut novel was a coming of age story and it went on to win multiple honors including the Reader Views Reviewer’s Choice Young Adult Book of the Year. With PULSE, he is changing to a new blended genre.
I am currently reading PULSE and I am finding the world the author is creating to be very intriguing. I do enjoy a good dystopian story and seeing the ways our world has changed in the future, so I definitely look forward to learning more as I get even further along in the story! I also love a good thriller and a good horror story, so getting a mix of the genres in one book instantly caught my attention!
Another feature of this book is that the author mixes media, often conveying dialogue with a somewhat script like format. I wondered if this would impact my reading, but I found myself easily able to settle in and I think it fit with the flow of the novel.
