Monday Reading Check In

I received a gifted advanced copy of THE SHADOW CABINET by Juno Dawson from Penguin Books.

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! Mine was pretty good. I have been a bit slumpy with my reading lately, but I participated in a readathon over the weekend that helped me get into a good reading mood. I also fell into a game rabbit hole with my Switch, but did some good audiobooking alongside. I also did manage to leave the house to hit the bookstore and get a bit of sunshine. I wound up in the middle of a few books over the weekend so my main goal this week is to try to finish some of them.

My latest currently reading book is THE SHADOW CABINET, the sequel to Juno Dawson’s HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL COVEN. I really had a good time with the first book so was thrilled when Penguin asked if I’d like a copy of the sequel. I am really enjoying being back with these characters and in this world. The first book ended with quite a bit moment, so I’ve been eagerly anticipating continuing on and seeing where this takes it.

I don’t want to say too much about the plot of this one for fear of spoiling things from HMRC, but the first book started by following a group of witches who were inducted into Her Majesty’s Royal Coven at the same time, but who have taken different paths since that time. Some embrace their magic, others have kept it under wraps. There is a lot of recovery following a deadly war and losses from that and a new young warlock on the scene creating waves with his great power. I love the political feel and the relationships in this and can’t wait to keep reading!

In other reading, I am taking a slow and steady approach to reading THE LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS by Joe Abercrombie for the Catch Up Book Club #Firstlawalong. I enjoy these books, but there never ones that I’m itching to pick back up, so I’m trying to read a bit at a time. I did put it down for the weekend and need to get back to it, but I have quite a while before the live show for this one so I’m not worried.

I am also in the middle of THE ONLY ONE LEFT by Riley Sager which has been a highly anticipated read. This I’m finding to be a pretty slow burn, but one that keeps me wanting to read so I’m not minding the slow pace.

Lastly, I am hoping to finish up THE WEAVER AND THE WITCH QUEEN by Genevieve Gornichec (eARC from Berkley, out 7/25/23). This is inspired by Viking history and myth in Norway and I am enjoying reading about some mythology that is a bit different from the retellings I generally find.

How was your weekend? Get up to anything fun or find any new great reads? I’d love to hear!
