OUT THERE SCREAMING is a collection of short stories focusing on “terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation“. These stories blend the real world horrors of discrimination and racism with various horror elements from demons to aliens, from the horrifying to the unseen. Stories are written by Erin E. Adams, Violet Allen, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Maurice Broaddus, Chesya Burke, P. Djèlí Clark, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Tananarive Due, Nalo Hopkinson, N. K. Jemisin, Justin C. Key, L. D. Lewis, Nnedi Okorafor, Tochi Onyebuchi, Rebecca Roanhorse, Nicole D. Sconiers, Rion Amilcar Scott, Terence Taylor, and Cadwell Turnbull.
I really enjoyed reading this collection throughout October, often picking up a story at a time on audio as I drove to work or in the physical copy between bigger reads to wind up my day at night. I really thought that the variety of the stories in the collection was well done with different time periods, from the past to the future, and a lot of very unique takes on a variety of horror tropes. The way each author presented a very unique take on blending real world injustices with fantastical horror was really well done.
This collection included a lot of familiar names that I’ve read before, but also introduced me to some new authors to watch out for. I’m always on the look out for new voices in horror and I was glad to add to my list!
OUT THERE SCREAMING is available now!
Great review! Definitely adding this to my list for next Halloween!
