A MISFORTUNE OF LAKE MONSTERS by Nicole M. Wolverton

I received a complimentary eARC copy of A MISFORTUNE OF LAKE MONSTERS by Nicole M. Wolverton – thank you to CamCat Books!

Publication Date: 7/2/2024

A MISFORTUNE OF LAKE MONSTERS follows Lemon and Troy. Lemon is a high school senior who dreams of leaving her small town life in Devil’s Elbow behind. The dream is dashed when her grandfather lets her in on the family secret. Her family has been perpetuating the myth of Old Lucy, the lake monster of Lake Lokakoma, and she will need to stay in town to personally keep the myth alive and the tourism trade of the whole town in business.

Troy doesn’t know her secret yet, but he’s got secrets of his own as he keeps his feelings for his BFF under wraps. When Lemon is attacked by an actual monster by the lake, she doesn’t know what to think. Soon Lemon and her friends are the only ones who know the truth and therefore the only ones who can save the town.

The idea of a family secret about perpetuating a lake monster myth was so intriguing, I just had to pick this one up. It did wind up feeling a bit younger than I had expected. It definitely gets gory and disturbing (things do not go well for the pet dogs among others) but the high school moments and the relationship between Troy and Lemon was a bit more of a focus than I personally would have preferred.

I think this would do well with a younger horror audience and for those who want a story that is a bit extreme and fun. A MISFORTUNE OF LAKE MONSTERS is out on July 2!
