Book Review

THE MEMORY WARD by Jon Bassoff

I received a gifted audiobook copy of THE MEMORY WARD by Jon Bassoff from Blackstone Publishing and LibroFM.

Rating: 4 / 5

THE MEMORY WARD is set in Bethlam, Nevada. It is an idyllic little town where everything and everyone is picture perfect. Hank Davies is the town postal worker, living a happy life with a good job and a good marriage. Then one day he trips and an envelope he’s meant to deliver opens to show him that the letter inside is blank. Being a bit nosy, Hank checks a couple more and they’re all blank too. Something seems a bit fishy.

Hank is not the only resident of Bethlam to notice that not everything is as it appears and when one of them reaches out to him in the dark of night to point some further information out, Hank becomes even more intrigued about what is going on in this town.

The cover for this one caught my eye (I mean… look at the eye on the cover!) and that’s about all I knew going into it. I decided to throw this book into the mix when I needed to let a spinner wheel decide my next book pick this past weekend and was happy to download it when the spinner wheel picked it! This one quickly hooked my attention and had me picking apart this world and everything Hank was telling us. We quickly see him talk about his wonderful memories of his marriage, but we are also noticing some interactions between Hank and his wife that call that into question.

The story soon takes some big twists I’m not going to talk about because I did really appreciate how it took some really hard turns and played with how the story was being told. I would suggest going into this one without reading the full synopsis like I did because I feel like the blurb gives more away than I would have wanted (my synopsis above doesn’t go nearly as far).

The ending of this one did leave me with a lot of unanswered questions so I don’t suggest it if you need answers to everything in the book. I personally could have used a few more answers, but I overall really enjoyed this!
