I received a complimentary ALC of WRITERS AND LIARS by Carol Goodman from Harper Audio and LibroFM!
Rating: 4 / 5
WRITERS AND LIARS is set on an isolated Greek island. Fifteen years ago, a group of writers were brought together on the island for a writers retreat. Maia was among those in attendance, mentored in her writing. She got a first book out of the experience, but also new scars after some of her fellow attendees betrayed her.
In the present, Maia has received another invitation to go back. She’s resistant, but those in charge know the right buttons to push to make a yes RSVP the only option. As the invitees gather, it is soon clear this is going to be a reunion of sorts, for better or worse, but when the host is found dead, they must move their focus onto survival.
This is an author I had enjoyed in the past, so I was glad to get to this recent release when I got a weekend challenge prompt to read my Libro FM books! I wound up getting sucked into the story pretty quickly. I do enjoy a good isolated setting and a bookish book, so for those reasons it was an easy win.
I liked Maia for the most part, though I did get a bit frustrated with some of the assumptions she made and the miscommunication that contributed. Still, I think there were good reasons (and youth) that made it understandable. I thought the inclusion of the dark academia vibes and the history of the island were well done and there were a lot of questions for the reader to consider about various motives and who to trust.
This was overall a fun read and I was easily able to binge read it during my weekend challenge. Definitely one I’d recommend to those who enjoy a good mystery and Greek mythology!
