Book Review

MY FRIENDS by Fredrik Backman

I received a gifted audiobook copy of MY FRIENDS by Fredrik Backman from Simon Audio!

Rating: 5 / 5

MY FRIENDS begins with a painting. It is Louisa’s favorite and she knows that it isn’t a painting of the sea as most people believe. At the end of the pier are three small figures in a moment of joy and laughter. She wants to know the story behind the painting. When she sneaks into an art exhibit to see the painting in person, it kicks off a journey that brings her to the story and those involved in it.

Fredrik Backman is absolutely an auto buy, auto read author and I went into this knowing I would love it. I am happy to say I was not disappointed! Louisa is alone in the world, an orphan who lost her best friend, her only person in the world. When she barges into the lives of those who know the painting’s story, it isn’t exactly a welcome intrusion, but the gradual movement from annoyance to friendship and love and found family was so well done.

The story is told in alternating timeline between the happenings of the present and the flashbacks to the past as Louisa begins to learn of the story. I loved how caught up she was in the story, because as she said, for her the action of the story was happening ‘now’. The focus on storytelling was top notch as well!

No big surprise, but I do highly recommend this one! The audiobook was really fantastic as well!
