I received a gifted audiobook copy of FEARFUL by Lauren Roberts from Simon Audio.
Rating: 3.5 / 5
FEARFUL is book 3.5 in the YA fantasy romance trilogy Powerless. This book takes place during the action of book three, but does also reveal what comes after. The story follows Mara, who is the embodiment of Death and focuses largely on Kitt’s actions from the main series. She additionally follows the relationship between two of the side characters.
It is hard to talk about an epilogue type book’s plot without spoiling anything from the main series, so I’m keeping the synopsis vague. I’ve seen a lot of mixed reception to this addition to the series, so I was very curious.
I really enjoyed having death as the main character narrating thing. It gives it a bit of a unique take and her interest in the characters she focuses in on makes sense as she’s living outside of the human condition herself. I appreciated her relationship with Kitt and the discussions they had. I was less intrigued by the side couple that she was also following as that was much more straight romance than plot points that intrigued me.
Overall I wouldn’t recommend picking this up without first having read the trilogy as this will spoil the twists in book three in particular. I don’t think this is a necessary add on in the series, but it does open things up for potential additions or spinoffs so I’ll be curious to find out of there will be more. This was a quick and overall entertaining read.
