Monday Reading Check In

Monday Morning Reading Check In

Happy Monday, book friends! My plans for the weekend for winetasting and a change of scenery were shut down by travel restrictions and stay at home orders, but I still managed to have a lovely weekend. Saturday involved getting out of the house with a friend, Italian food and a cupcake run and Sunday was staying at home with Christmas movies and good books and a snuggly pup. So overall, a weekend I definitely did not want to end!

I picked up THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI Akwaeke Emezi when it was first listed as a Book of the Month pick, but it has been sitting on my shelf ever since. When I saw a buddy read for it this month, I decided last minute to join in and I am very glad I did. I picked it up yesterday to just page through the first couple chapters and wound up flying through more than half the book before I knew it! This is my first book by the author, though I have had FRESHWATER on my TBR as well. The writing was very easy for me to settle into and I love the descriptive language and characters!

THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI begins with the knowledge that Vivek has been killed, though we don’t know the full story. He is found by his mother, wrapped and placed on her doorstep in their hometown in Nigeria with no knowledge of what happened. The book unfolds from there along multiple perspectives and timelines including both third person chapters and first person POVs from Vivek himself and his cousin Osita. Their perspectives add multiple layers to Vivek’s story as he grapples with his feelings about himself and others and with others’ feelings about him.

While this isn’t a warm and cozy read, it is definitely a book I am looking forward to curling up with to finish up today! Who’s ready for a coffee break?!

In addition to this one, I have a few other books on the go after a weekend where I definitely got back into a reading groove!

THE PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE by Samantha Shannon is another one that I picked up for a buddy read planning to only read the first chapter or two to get a handle on the pace of the book, but somehow wound up 100 pages in. This is for a two month buddy read so I will be pacing myself going through this one. So far there are a lot of characters and places to learn, so I don’t fully have a handle on the plot itself, but I am finding it an easier read than originally expected and I am enjoying it!

RAYBEARER by Jordan Ifueko is one of my backlogged Once Upon a Book Club boxes so I started in on this one as well. Tarisai has been raised in isolation and now has been sent to the prince to become part of his inner circle. Problem is Tarisai’s mother has put her under a compulsion that once she is in, she must kill the prince. I’m only a few chapters in, but so far I am enjoying it. It definitely has some fairytale vibes and potential for danger and intrigue so I’m looking forward to continuing.

Lastly, I am still working on LONESOME DOVE by Larry McMurtry and I am really enjoying it. We have our final chat for the Classics Buddy Read group in a couple weeks so I will be working my way through to the finish soon!

What are you kicking off your week reading? I’d love to hear!
