Happy Monday, all!
Another Monday, another currently reading post – this one is my #WITReadathon TBR edition! August is Women in Translation Month and this week is the dedicated Women in Translation readathon which encourages readers to pick up books written by women in a language other than their own. I won’t be solely reading translated books this week (it is #AmbitiousAugust afterall with far too many overlapping readathons) but I will plan to try to get to a few that I have had on my TBR for too long!
For my actual current read, I started TENDER IS THE FLESH by Agustina Bazterrica and translated by Sarah Moses. This is a book I have heard about from a few people recently and it has had me intrigued. When Dystopian came up as a #PickPongAThon prompt, this was the first book that came to mind.
TENDER IS THE FLESH is set in a world where all animal flesh has been infected and it is now poisonous to humans. The government has therefore sanctioned the raising and slaughtering of people for food. Our main character Marcos works in a position of power in one of these plants where “heads” are slaughtered.
This is a dark and very disturbing read, but also really interesting and it has definitely grabbed my full attention. It isn’t an easy read (my other current read has food descriptions about cupcakes – I prefer those to be honest) and you do need to go in expecting the brutality of slaughtering people like animals, but I am enjoying (that might not be the right word?) it? It is a short book so I do suspect I’ll be wrapping this one up today!
Also on my shelves for potential reads this week
WHEREABOUTS by Jhumpa Lahiri
THE TRAP by Melanie Raabe
THE BOOK JUMPER by Mechthild Gläser
And because I have a couple other non-translated books currently in progress:
FAKE IT TILL YOU BAKE IT by Jamie Wesley is my randomized TBR book for Pickpongathon and I was in the mood for an easy, light hearted read yesterday. I’m already nearly halfway into this one and I am enjoying this cupcake shop based fake dating romance. This one came in one of my Once Upon A Bookclub boxes which also makes it a fun read!
THE BITTER TWINS by Jen Williams is for the Backlist Bookclub and I made it about a third of the way in before setting it aside for another readathon over the weekend. The live show for this one is this coming weekend, so I really need to get back to it. It is a chunky but pretty easy read and I’m enjoying it!
Do you have any translated book recommendations? What are you currently reading? I’d love to hear!
