Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

THE CONFESSION by Jo Spain was our first #SaturdayBookstaClub book pick for March. We decided to go with a new to us Irish author to kick off March!

THE CONFESSION starts off with a brutal attack. While Harry and Julie are enjoying a quiet night in front of the TV an unknown man walks into their home and beats Harry while Julie watches, froze in shock and fear. An hour later, JP Carney shows up at the police station still covered in blood to confess to the crime. The police can’t quite believe what has landed in their laps.

Harry was a notorious man, accused but not convicted of financial malfeasance. It seems unlikely that this crime was completely random and unprovoked as JP states, but they don’t have a clue what the truth is. The book proceeds with the POVs of Julie, JP, and police detective Alice including the present day narrative and flashbacks to the past to slowly uncover what has brought these characters to the present day.

I really loved the way this book was laid out. It immediately had me hooked with that attack in the opening pages and we quickly know the answer to who did the crime. Even so, the mystery is just getting started! There are so many twists and turns that will keep you hooked reading this one figuring out what exactly went on. We had a fantastic time at the mid-way chat throwing out theories and ideas of where the narrative was heading.

The characters are not entirely likeable (some are more than others), but they are all multi-layered and complicated in the best possible ways. There were some twists along the way I saw coming to an extent, but the author definitely threw in some surprises too through the very last pages. I did this book on audio and it included multiple narrators which really helped with keeping the different POVs straight for me! (The Irish accents also helped me feel immersed in the story.)

Jo Spain is a new to me author and I will be looking forward to picking up more books in the future!
